A City That Was Not Supposed to Die That Morning
There are some dates that history refuses to allow us to
forget.
6 August 1945: Hiroshima.
9 August 1945: Nagasaki.
As long as human civilisation survives, the names of these two cities will remain inseparable from one of the darkest achievements of modern science: the moment when humanity learned not merely how to split the atom, but how to turn that knowledge against entire cities.
The atomic bomb was born from extraordinary physics.
Its first use against human beings produced something else
entirely—a wound in history that has never fully healed.
The Cities Chosen for Destruction
In the final months of the Second World War, American
planners considered several Japanese cities as possible targets for the new
weapon. Among them were Kyoto, Hiroshima, Kokura, Niigata and, later,
Nagasaki. Yokohama was also discussed during the broader target-selection
process, but by the summer of 1945 it had already suffered enormous destruction
from conventional bombing.
Kyoto was perhaps the most controversial choice.
It was one of Japan’s great cultural and historical centres:
a city of temples, gardens, universities and centuries of memory.
Henry L. Stimson, the United States Secretary of War,
strongly opposed its destruction and repeatedly pressed for Kyoto to be removed
from the target list.
Viewers of Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer may
remember a scene suggesting that Stimson had spent his honeymoon in Kyoto.
It is memorable cinema.
It is not history.
Stimson did visit Kyoto, but not on his honeymoon. His
objections were rooted far more deeply in the city’s cultural importance and in
his fear that destroying such a symbolic centre of Japanese civilisation would
create lasting hatred toward the United States.
Kyoto survived.
History turned elsewhere.
Yokohama Had Already Burned
Yokohama escaped atomic destruction for a grim reason.
On 29 May 1945, a massive American incendiary raid
had already devastated much of the city.
For those planning the atomic attacks, a city that had
already been extensively destroyed was less useful as a target for evaluating
the effects of the new weapon.
They wanted cities where the devastation could be clearly
measured.
The logic was cold.
Buildings, streets and human lives became part of an
experiment in destructive power.
By August 1945, Hiroshima stood near the top of the
target list.
On the morning of 6 August, the B-29 Enola Gay
released Little Boy over the city.
Within seconds, Hiroshima became a name the world would
never again hear innocently.
Three days later, another B-29 took off carrying another
atomic bomb.
Its primary target was Kokura.
Its name was Fat Man.
The Luck of Kokura
On the morning of 9 August 1945, Major Charles
Sweeney piloted the B-29 Bockscar toward Kokura.
The aircraft circled the city repeatedly.
But below lay cloud and smoke.
Visibility was poor.
The mission orders required visual bombing, and the crew
could not obtain a clear enough view of the target.
Kokura survived.
The phrase “the luck of Kokura” would later enter
Japanese memory—a chilling expression for survival by chance.
But the bomb was still aboard the aircraft.
Fuel was running low.
A decision had to be made.
The B-29 turned toward its secondary target:
Nagasaki.
The Clouds Opened
Nagasaki lay roughly 150 kilometres southwest of Kokura.
The city was partially covered by cloud as well. For a time,
it appeared that the crew might be unable to bomb there either.
Then, through a break in the clouds, the ground became
visible.
At approximately 11:02 in the morning, Fat Man fell.
The plutonium bomb exploded over the Urakami Valley.
For a fraction of a second, a light brighter than anything
the people below had ever seen flashed across the city.
Then came heat.
Then blast.
Then fire.
Homes collapsed.
Factories disappeared.
Churches shattered.
People vanished beneath rubble or were burned where they
stood.
The city had entered the atomic age.
Not through choice.
Not through science.
But through destruction.
A Second City
There is something especially haunting about Nagasaki.
Hiroshima had been the first target on 6 August.
Nagasaki, by contrast, became the second atomic-bombed city
partly because the weather over another city had intervened.
Had the clouds over Kokura shifted differently, history
might have attached the name Kokura to 9 August 1945 instead.
That is perhaps one of the most disturbing truths of war.
Sometimes the boundary between survival and annihilation can
be a cloud.
A patch of smoke.
A change in wind.
A few minutes in an aircraft’s flight path.
For the people living below, history can turn on
circumstances they will never know existed.

Trinity: Where the Atomic Age Began
Many years later, in April 2002, I had the
opportunity to visit the Trinity Site in New Mexico, where the world’s
first atomic bomb was experimentally detonated on 16 July 1945.
The landscape appears quiet.
But it is not an ordinary place.
This was where humanity first watched an artificial sun rise
from the desert.
The explosion proved that the bomb worked.
Less than a month later, atomic bombs would fall on Japanese
cities.
Historical signs and displays at the Trinity Site preserve
the story of that morning.
The desert has become a monument to one of science’s
greatest technical achievements—and one of civilisation’s most unsettling
turning points.
Standing there, it is difficult not to feel the
contradiction.
The same human intelligence capable of understanding the
nucleus had also discovered how to release enough energy from it to destroy a
city.

Hiroshima: Memory Preserved
I have also visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
There are places where history feels distant.
Hiroshima is not one of them.
Inside the Peace Memorial Museum, the atomic bombing is
preserved through photographs, objects, testimonies and models.
Among the exhibits are representations of the two weapons
whose names have become permanently attached to August 1945:
Little Boy.
Fat Man.
The names sound almost playful.
The reality behind them is not.
These were machines designed to release nuclear energy over
inhabited cities.
The museum keeps their memory visible not to glorify the
weapons, but to confront visitors with what they did.
The world is invited to look.
And to remember.

The Children Who Pray
But perhaps the most powerful image in Hiroshima is not a
bomb.
It is the children.
School groups arrive at the Peace Memorial Park in orderly
rows.
They stand quietly.
They bow their heads.
Sometimes they bring strings of brightly coloured paper
cranes.
And they pray for peace.
There is something profoundly moving in that sight.
Children born generations after the bombing gather at the
place where thousands of children once died and ask for a world without such
destruction.
Their prayer is simple.
Let hatred end.
Let violence end.
Let humanity learn.
Standing there, the heart becomes heavy.
One becomes aware of the enormous distance between the
innocence of those children and the machinery of power that nations continue to
build.
Science Without Conscience
Hiroshima and Nagasaki are often described as milestones in
military history.
They are also milestones in the history of science.
The physics behind the bomb was magnificent.
The human consequences were catastrophic.
And therein lies one of the central moral questions of
modern civilisation:
Is everything that science makes possible something
humanity should do?
Science can reveal the structure of the atom.
It can cure disease.
It can produce energy.
It can explore distant galaxies.
It can also multiply the destructive power of governments
beyond anything previous generations could imagine.
Knowledge itself has no conscience.
People must supply it.
What Nagasaki Still Asks of Us
More than eight decades have passed since the bombing of
Nagasaki.
The city was rebuilt.
Its streets filled again.
Children were born.
Schools reopened.
Church bells rang once more.
Life returned.
But memory remains.
And perhaps that is why Nagasaki Day matters.
It is not only a day to remember the dead.
It is a day to remember how easily scientific brilliance,
nationalism, fear and military power can converge into catastrophe.
At Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, children continue to pray
for peace.
Their prayer is not complicated.
It asks something far more difficult than building a bomb.
It asks human beings to control themselves.
To restrain hatred.
To resist the intoxication of power.
To value lives they will never personally know.
And to ensure that the names Hiroshima and Nagasaki
remain not the opening chapter of an atomic future, but the final warning from
an atomic past.

Remember the science.
Remember the choice.
And above all, remember the responsibility.
