On 24 February 1955, when the baby boy was born in a hospital in San Francisco, he was given the name Abdul Latif Jandali. His biological father, Abdul Fattah Jandali, came from a wealthy Muslim family in Syria. He had come to the University of Wisconsin in the United States to pursue a PhD in Political Science.
