Happy Birthday Steve Jobs

On 24 February 1955, when the baby boy was born in a hospital in San Francisco, he was given the name Abdul Latif Jandali. His biological father, Abdul Fattah Jandali, came from a wealthy Muslim family in Syria. He had come to the University of Wisconsin in the United States to pursue a PhD in Political Science. There he fell in love with Joanne Schieble.

Joanne’s family were strict Catholics. Her parents did not accept their daughter’s relationship with a Muslim man under any circumstances. They also insisted that if Joanne wanted to marry Abdul Fattah Jandali, she would have to convert to Islam, which Joanne was not willing to do. By that time, however, she had already become pregnant. Because of her strong Catholic beliefs, she also refused to have an abortion.

Therefore, she decided that after the baby was born, he would be given up for adoption. But she had one condition: the couple who adopted her son must be university educated. To avoid any possible social stigma for the family, the adoption was kept “closed,” meaning the identities of the biological parents would remain secret.

At first, a lawyer couple showed interest in adopting the baby, but they changed their minds after seeing him because they wanted to adopt a girl. Later, the child was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs. They named him Steven Paul Jobs.

Paul Jobs was a mechanic and had never had the opportunity to attend university. Because of this, Joanne was initially unwilling to give her son to the Jobs family. However, when Paul and Clara promised that they would educate the child properly no matter how difficult it might be, Joanne finally agreed.

Until his teenage years, Steve Jobs believed Paul and Clara to be his real parents. When Steve turned eighteen, Paul told him that they had adopted him from the hospital. However, they themselves did not know the identities of his biological parents. Steve showed little interest in finding his biological parents until he was about 27 or 28 years old.

At that time, he was busy working on the development of personal computer technology, helping to change the technological landscape of the world. After the successful invention of Apple computers in the early 1980s, Steve Jobs used his adoption documents to trace the identity of his biological mother. From her, he learned the identity of his biological father. However, he never showed any interest in contacting his biological father. To Steve, Paul and Clara were always his true parents.

The iPod, iPad, iMac, and iPhone have transformed the entire world. It is impossible to fully express how much we owe Steve Jobs, the man behind these revolutionary changes.
